Más Y Más

Last Wednesday evening, I made a trip down to The Bell in Bath as I heard there was going to be a Latin Trio playing that night. Intrigued of course, I headed down around 9pm just in time not to miss a thing! The band are called Más Y Más [which means ‘more and more’ in English] and believe me if you see them you will understand where the name comes from. The guys [Rikki Thomas-Martínez, Wayne D. Evans and Richard Kensington] have been playing music together since 1995 and are based up in Nottingham.

The music of Más Y Más is an irresistible rythmic meeting of Latin, Flamenco and Afro-Cuban flavours seamed together with  elegant vocal harmonies and delivered with genuine enthusiasm. The band stick to a recipe of acoustic instruments including a nylon string guitar, double bass and percussion.

The band members each has a very impressive musical portfolio. They were very fortunate to have recorded their third album in La Habana, Cuba in 2008 working with local musicians! Rikki tells the full story on the Más Y Más blog, which is a seriously interesting and entertaining read.

Richard on Drums

It’s really quite something to watch Richard in action on the drums as he keeps time with the congas, cajón, bongos, wood block and bass drum simultaneously while still managing to moonlight on vocal harmonies.

The best part of the night for me was when I won the dance competition [for getting the floor going] and was awarded a free CD & DVD! Thanks Fernando from K’Chevere for the dance to the last song, a cover of a Buena Vista Social Club salsa number.

I hope you take delight in getting to know the music of Más Y Más. As it’s a Wednesday night I shall be heading down to The Bell later to check out Polly & The Billets-Doux!

Gracias por lectura!
